Mentoring and editing services
Gerard has a Ph.D. in American (Gothic) literature and is an experienced educator and leader of writing workshops. He hosts workshops here at home and he and his partner, Jane Simpson, travel with other writers on retreat overseas. Gerard also holds degrees in Masters of Arts, Bachelor of Arts, and Bachelor of Education.
Gerard has been a featured workshop leader with the Writers’ Federation of New Brunswick, Writers’ Alliance of Newfoundland and Labrador, the prestigious Piper’s Frith in Newfoundland, and Lily Daly Assembly in New York. He has delivered multiple workshops to high school students, and in 2017, Gerard was invited to deliver a lecture to Masters in Creative Writing students at Newcastle University, UK, as well as a public reading at the Newcastle Centre for the Literary Arts. Most recently, Gerard was invited to teach a Masterclass in creative writing by the Northrup Frye Festival as well as the Louisiana Book Festival.
Gerard also edits the work of select candidates, for a fee. Because comprehensive editing can be so intensive, he can only mentor those who are both dedicated to the craft of writing and who show great commitment and promise. Gerard makes his decision after reading a short excerpt of a writer’s work and discussing their writing and goals.
